Hey everyone! I’m so excited to show you one of my latest completed DIY projects. You’ve probably seen large distressed wood wall clocks as home decor, especially in [farmhouse style homes](https://decoratingwithless.com/20-farmhouse-decor-ideas). Now, a store-bought distressed wood plank wall clock will cost you easily over $100 and on up. That’s way too much for my budget. I’m always looking for ways to decorate my home for less. *How about you?*

## **Get the look for Less**

I wanted a distressed wood plank wall clock for my living room. So to get the look on a shoestring budget, it was DIY time!

For less than $20 I was able to create a stunning farmhouse style [distressed wood](https://decoratingwithless.com/how-to-make-a-diy-distressed-wood-crate) plank wall clock. You can do the same too, no joke. I’m going to show you how.

## **How to Make a Distressed Wood Plank Wall Clock**

#### Materials & Supplies:

- 24" diameter circle plywood backer board
- Strap wood planks of varying sizes
- Wood Stain, I used Minwax Jacobean Stain.
- Chalk Paint, I use Amy Howard Chelsea Squares as the base color. Then two accent colors of [DIY chalk paint](https://decoratingwithless.com/how-to-make-a-diy-distressed-wood-crate).
- Deco Art Americana Decor Stencil, Old World Numbers
- Clock Motor and Hand Set
- Craft Paper

#### Tools:

- Jigsaw
- Oscillating Saw
- Strap Gun
- Chalk Paint Brush
- Stencil Brush
- Power Drill
- 30/60 Triangle

First, I went to my scrap wood pile, which is growing because I can’t help but keep and salvage wood. I picked a mixed of wood types and sizes to give the clock more of a reclaimed style.

Using a pneumatic power sprayer I attached each board to the backer board. The backer board I used was a curbside table top I reused. To me almost everything can be repurposed into decor.

Next, I grabbed my jigsaw to trim the wood planks to the size of the circle.

Then I stained the wood planks with my favorite dark stain. I really love the richness of darker woods and they create perfect contrast.

Now to give the wood planks a distressed appearance, I dry brushed chalk paint over stain. I wanted the paint to look weathered. I used two accent colors to coordinate with the color scheme in my living room.

After the paint dried overnight, I created a template to help me figure out the placement of the clock numbers. I did this with a roll of craft paper and traced the circumference of the clock.

Then I began folding the paper to find the center point. I was nervous I would put the numbers too close together. This helped. The numbers should be 30 degrees apart from each other. A 30/60 triangle makes this easy to figure out.

Using a stencil and stencil brush I painted the numbers on. To make it easier, I decided I would only do numbers for 12, 3, 6, 9. The rest of the numbers would be represented by dashes. Overall, I love the look!

Final step was installing the clock motor and hands. First, I drilled a hole in the center point. With my oscillating saw, I created a recess for the motor to sit in.

Lastly, I installed the hour and minute hand following the installation instructions.

## **A Distressed Wood Plank Wall Clock for Less**

This DIY wall clock is the perfect addition to the [home decor](https://decoratingwithless.com/26-common-items-repurpose-home-decor) of my farmhouse living room. I am not done with this room yet, it is an on going process. Home decorating is a journey not a sprint. I don’t mind going slow. Going slow allows me to save money and do awesome DIY projects like this distressed wood plank wall clock.

I hope this and my other DIY project inspires you to create home decor of your own.
